Fifth Weigh-In

I weighed in this week at 284.8lbs., a weight gain of 2.4lbs. I tell ya, I'm so disappointed with myself. The worst part is this week I didn't eat out as much and I did my best to watch my calorie, fat and sugar intake, but I still gained weight instead of losing it. I suppose I'll just have to try harder to achieve a weight loss next week.

I guess I should start exercising again. I've been so busy working that I didn't exercise at all this week, and I really did have plans to. In fact, I had planned to add some exercises to my routine, but I stayed so busy that I didn't get around to it. I'll just have to push harder and pray for the determination I need to get back to my exercises. With prayer, anything is possible.

Until next time, stay healthy and keep me in your prayers.

Hi Misti,

Sorry to hear about the bad week (weight-wise). Don't get discouraged. Sometimes it takes a while to figure out what works and what doesn't. Just keep experimenting, changing how many times you eat and the types of food you choose. If you really want to jumpstart your diet, try cutting carbohydrates to a minimum for a week. That usually breaks the cycle and allows your body to get going. Good luck! Diana

Diana,

Thanks for the encouragement and advice. I hear it's actually a bad idea to cut carbs because they say your body does need them, so if I were to set a minimum on my carbs for the week, how many would you recommend?

I know this is discouraging, Misti. But at least you're doing something. I have procrastinated and not even started trying to diet. I'll pray that both of us get back on track.

Yes, your body does need carbohydrates, which is why I don't really advocate diets like Atkins. But you can cut them to a minimum for a week. This means, basically, eliminating anything with sugar on it, anything with white flour or starches. So no bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, energy bars (even if they're fat free), cereal. You can eat some brown (or wild) rice or buckwheat (I love it!). You will still get carbs from other sources, so no need to worry. Many veggies have carbs, and so do fruits. Nuts are also a healthy carb choice. One word of warning, though --If you're used to eating lots of carbs, cutting down on them drastically will give you headaches. This is normal and it usually goes away after a couple of days.

I hesitated about writing this because I don’t want to be discouraging at all, but in the end I decided that when I was a teenager and I was overweight, I would have loved to have somebody step in and give me advice. So that’s why I’m doing it. If it feels like too much of an intrusion, then please ignore it. The truth is that you really shouldn’t be having such a hard time losing weight --The more you have to lose, the easier it comes off, especially during the first few weeks. If that’s not happening, then you need to take a serious look at what you’re doing wrong. The ab exercises are good for toning, but they will not do anything for the actual weight loss. You’re probably not burning more than 100 calories (if that) there. Just to give you an idea of how hard it is to burn calories: the average person burns about 450 running for an hour on a treadmill at high speed. (Just to remind you: a pound equals 3500 calories). What I mean is, the actual weight loss NEEDS to be a result of dietary changes. Don’t factor in whether or not you are exercising this particular week to evaluate your weight loss. I’m not saying this to discourage you at all. Just to point out where you need to focus! Diana
